THE IT MGMT PERSPECTIVE
Cloud Migration
Start with the work that needs to move, the people who use it and a tested route back. Use this collection to decide whether you are ready to plan a move, fix access first or verify recovery before changing systems.

Choose the next step for your cloud move
A cloud migration changes more than a file location. Before choosing a cutover date, identify the applications, users, printers and other dependencies that must still work afterward. Use one manageable workload to test the plan.
- If you have not mapped the move: start with the small-business cloud migration guide. Write down the current system, destination, owner and acceptance test for each workload.
- If nobody owns the accounts: review shared logins and named accounts. Confirm who controls subscriptions and recovery before moving business data into a new workspace.
- If you are relying on retention as recovery: read Microsoft 365 backup versus retention. Test a non-sensitive sample restore to a separate location and record the result.
Your go/no-go note
Record the business owner, required access, migration window, acceptance checks and rollback decision. Include any dependency that has not been tested. Do not retire the source system until the agreed checks and retention requirements are satisfied.
Microsoft’s migration planning guidance covers readiness, workload sequencing and rollback planning for Azure. Those planning questions are useful here; its product-specific steps are not a universal Microsoft 365 migration procedure.
