At ISC West 2026 in Las Vegas, I was particularly interested in how physical security systems connect with the networks and accounts businesses already depend on. Cameras, access systems and cloud management tools need to fit a broader operating plan.
What caught my attention
My original event notes highlighted i3 International’s video analytics, HID’s access and identity systems, DeleteMe’s focus on personal data exposure and hands-on time with Ubiquiti’s networking and security ecosystem. These were observations from the event, rather than compatibility or performance guarantees for a customer installation.
Evaluate analytics with the intended use in mind
Before relying on an alert or operational metric, define what it should detect and what a person does next. Test the actual environment, including lighting, movement and normal exceptions. A demonstration should lead to questions about false alerts, missed events, retention and who can access the output.
Connect the system without creating unnecessary access
Map the cameras, recorders, access controllers and management accounts. Identify which connections are required and how vendors obtain support access. Plan appropriate separation from unrelated business devices and test the paths the authorized team still needs.
Check compatibility and interruption before a purchase
Existing cameras and recorders vary by model, firmware and integration support. Confirm the exact equipment and licenses in a proposal. A cloud-managed service also needs an understood plan for internet loss, local functions and recovery; it should not be described as universally compatible or guaranteed to deploy without downtime.
Assign privacy and operational ownership
Decide who can view and export recordings, how long information is retained and who reviews access. The business should determine its policies and applicable requirements with the appropriate advisers. Technical convenience alone is not a reason to collect or retain more information.
What this means for IT MGMT clients
The show reinforced the value of planning network infrastructure, cybersecurity and specialty technology together. Our job is to turn a business requirement into a scoped design, verify the result and make the ongoing ownership clear.
For households, cameras and smart devices raise related questions on a different scale. Our Home IT service addresses those needs alongside household Wi-Fi and device connectivity.
